Luray Caverns were discovered on 13 August 1878 by five men of Luray namely Andrew J. Campbell a local tinsmith, William Campbell, John “Quint” Campbell, and Benton Stebbins a local photographer. They had been drawn by limestone prominence and by a sinkhole which Anglo observed drafts of chilly air coming out from. Looking for a cave, the men began to excavate and after approximately 4 hours of the digging; they produced a hole where the two slender men (Andrew and Quint) could crawl in and slide down a rope to perform the exploration at night using a candle.de of the earth, the subterranean world.

We had a two-hour self-guided tour of Luray Caverns and had the opportunity to observe beautiful formations of crystals. I learned that such formations typically take about 40-50 years to fully develop. The guides, especially those who talked to us about the crystal types and their growth process, were very informative.
As we moved through the different caves, the beauty of the pinnacles and rocks astounded me. Every part of the cave had something special to offer, making the visit both informative and breathtaking.
