Watching a sunrise is inherently magical, particularly at the mind-blowing location of Montauk Point Lighthouse. It is a place of great significance to the residents of Brentwood, NY and our family’s recent outing was one unforgettable story that will forever be in our hearts.
We set off on a chilly morning filled with eagerness and expectation. The previous night, my daughters were very happy and didn’t sleep well. My two brothers joined us turning our journey into a beautiful family affair. We hit the road two hours before sunrise determined to experience every moment of the first light of the day.
The trip itself was an overture to what awaited us. The silence of the wee hours combined with the picturesque surroundings provided a perfect setting. Despite being kept awake by my kids’ efforts to watch till dawn, they eventually dozed off because they couldn’t keep their eyes open anymore.
The cold at Montauk Point Lighthouse was revealed. Then, we ready in our winter clothes with visible breaths circulating through the chilly air Yes, there were shivers but as we looked around, an unspoken awe filled the area. The lighthouse was such a historical spectacle in its own right as the white paint seemed to radiate with every visible light from Mitch’s beam at 35 knots; I watched it stand taller than anything else around us but dark and voiceless like an old man maintaining guard he rose above cliffs shoreward awaiting first-morning glow.
We felt the excitement building as the aurora began to shine afar. The sky slowly changed, getting shades of purplish orange. Nature seemed to be using its brightest colors to paint all over the sky. The colors became more vivid, creating an extraordinary light on everything around us. The purples deepened and oranges became brighter, reflecting on the seawater and making a reflection of colors.
It was simply beautiful and serene when finally the sun rose. The sky got brighter and brighter illuminating the lighthouse together with all that was around it. I could feel the warmth from the golden sun rays that made me forget about the cool winter breeze for a moment. My daughters had woken up by now; they stood there watching in awe which had replaced their earlier enthusiasm.a
We drank our coffee, feeling the warmth seep through us from both the drink and the sun coming up. The entire scene was like a dream composed of natural beauty and collective experience. It was by far the most amazing sunrise I had ever seen in my life. Montauk Point Lighthouse’s view gave an ideal spot to watch this miraculous event; thus, waking up early in the morning and suffering a cold was worth it.
